TRADE MINISTER, SECOND-IN-COMMAND SACKED

A little over a year after their appointments, the minister of trade, Abdurahman Sheikh Mohammed, and minister of state for Trade, Ahmed Tussa, have been officially removed from their posts, it was learnt.
Reliable sources told The Reporter that the recently increasing public discontent especially since the introduction of the price cap back in January— which was later on  removed in June — and the slow pace of the ministry with regard to the Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) are some of the reasons for the removal of the officials.

The five-month controversy that was the price cap — introduced by the Ministry of Trade — on an assortment of commodity items was criticized by many for lacking scrutiny on both the need for the cap in the first place and the government’s means of effecting and enforcing it.

While most consumers were for the move in hopes of affordable necessities, businesses and analysts have been criticizing the cap and even at times hinting that the strategy was doomed to fail as it was not based on reliable assessment.

Evidently, the two officials were relived from their duties last week and have been assigned to other posts, according to sources close to the matter.

Abdurahman was assigned to be the vice president of the Somali Regional State while Ahmed will head the newly-formed amalgamation of the three state-owned companies – Ethiopian Shipping Lines (ESL), Ethiopian Maritime Transit Services (EMTS) and the youngest Dry Port Services Enterprise (DPSE), according to sources.

Before taking the position of minister of Trade, Abdurahman was the head of the Somali Regional State Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Bureau and Head of Regional Education Bureau and was Somali Region’s Cabinet member. He is also a Member of the Executive Committee of the Somali People’s Democratic Party (SPDP). Ahmed Tussa was former minister of state for Trade and Industry under Girma Birru.
