A Somali legislator has accused Djibouti President of Ismael Omar Ghelleh of opposing the decision of the former's parliament to extend term by three years.
Mr Abdalla Jama Jibril added that the Djiboutian leader had sided with the Cabinet on the way forward for the Transitional Federal Government (TFG), whose term is going to expire on August 20.
The government proposed an extension of one year for all the transitional federal institutions from August 21 until August 20, 2012.
Mr Jibril stated that the Somali Government rejected the legislators’ position because of an influence from Djibouti. He added that parliament would enforce its decision to hold an election for the positions of the president of the TFG and the Speaker of National Assembly.
“We use a parliamentary system here and that is why the Cabinet cannot oppose a decision reached by the overwhelming majority of MPs,” he added.
The latest constitutional crisis in the TFG follows a move by parliament in February to vote for an extension of its term, plus election of new Speaker and president before the TFG’s term ends.
The MP was reacting to a statement released on Sunday by the Council of Ministers stating that no elections could be held in the country under the current security situation.
