Zambia police arrested late Wednesday the country's former Defence Minister George Mpombo, a fierce critic of President Rupiah Banda, for theft by public servant and forgery of documents, his lawyer confirmed.
Mr Mpombo, who quit from President Rupiah Banda's Cabinet in 2009 citing corruption and nepotism in the administration, is alleged to have committed the offences when he served as Defence Minister.
The police arrested Mr Mpombo on six counts of theft by public servant and forgery of documents, said his lawyer Wynter Kabimba.
Mr Mpombo has been released on police bond and is expected to appear in court on April 29 in Lusaka, Mr Kabimba said.
Mr Mpombo described his arrest as "political persecution" over his criticism of President Banda's government, which he has constantly condemned for what he says is the mismanagement of country's affairs.
Mr Mpombo described his arrest as “an abuse of the court process” and vowed that the court would find him innocent.
