Food Inflation in Ethiopia Continue to Rise

Food inflation in Ethiopia for the month of July 2011 rises to 47.4 percent from it was 45.3 the previous month while general inflation of the country has also mounted to 39.2 percent from 38.1 in June 2011, Central Statistics monthly report indicated. 
“Among the food components, a rise in the indices of Cereals, Pulses Coffee, Pepper whole and other food items was observed in July 2011,” the report noted.

“The non-food components majority of them showed an increasing trend; specially, the indices of Clothing and Footwear, House Rent, Construction Materials and Fuel, Furniture and Furnishing, Transport and Personal care and effects are showing a relatively stable increasing trend.”

However, the report also indicated that the rate of increase in prices of the Food components of the index has been at a slower rate than the one observed in June 2011.

The country level food inflation increased by 19.8 percent as compared to the -4.5 percent a year ago. While the country level non-food inflation rate increased by 22.6 percent in July 2011 as compared to 18.4 percent in July 2010.
